David Kram is the Founder & CEO of Silk Road, @SilkRoadBrand, a legal cannabis brand that produces high-quality cannabis oil paired with advanced vaping technology.
We caught up with David and asked him a couple of questions with regards to his background and his company Silk Road.
Ganjly: What is your background and what made you decide to pursue a career in cannabis?
David Kram: My background is in finance, I was an investment banker in San Francisco helping to advise high-growth technology companies on M&A, financing and IPO activities. After tragically losing my younger brother two years ago to the opioid crisis, I made the switch to cannabis because I wanted to help spread awareness of cannabis as a healthier alternative to pills. I wanted to create a socially responsible cannabis company that made a real difference in the world by utilizing the miraculous healing powers of the cannabis plant.
Ganjly: How many employees does Silk Road have and what kind of traits do you look for when hiring new members?
David Kram: We currently have a small team of 5, but are ramping up hiring in sales and marketing! We look for individuals who are knowledgeable about cannabis and its benefits, who want to make an immediate impact on a growing company, and those who are professional, but also who understand the culture of the industry. Above all else, we look for people that are hungry and can hustle as it takes a lot of hard work, perseverance and determination to build a successful company in a highly-competitive industry like cannabis.
Ganjly: What is the most challenging experience you have had in the cannabis industry so far?
David Kram: The most challenging experience we have faced in the industry thus far is definitely the various regulations and compliance requirements. Cannabis is evolving rapidly, and it requires you to stay on top of regulations that are constantly changing in order to maintain compliance and grow your business in the right way. While the regulations are quite restrictive and vast in scope, they are necessary to ensure the health and longevity of the industry as a whole.
Ganjly: What is your proudest moment since you started down this path of being an entrepreneur in the cannabis space?
David Kram: My proudest moment(s) so far have been when I hear positive feedback from customers and community members. Being able to help improve the quality of someone’s life, either medicinally or recreationally, and hearing people’s stories about how cannabis helps with pain and provides relief to countless ailments is both motivating and humbling at the same time. It’s a really good feeling to know that the work that you do has the potential to help countless members of society live better lives.
Ganjly: Do you have plans for new products, services or events and would you be willing to drop any hints about what we can expect from Silk Road in the future?
David Kram: Yes! We are always working on new things behind the scenes. We are working on a new product, however I cannot reveal too many details about it just yet. We are really excited about it and hope to release it to the world in the coming months!
Ganjly: What is your advice for hopeful cannabis entrepreneurs who are considering joining the cannabis industry? What are the positives and negatives they should expect?
David Kram: My advice for anyone entering the industry is to do your homework! There is so much to learn, from regulations to policy to distribution to manufacturing to sales, etc. Absorbing as much information as you can is imperative in order to be successful. The positive aspect of cannabis is that it is here to stay. This is a legit industry and it isn’t going anywhere. The negatives are that it’s perhaps one of the hardest industries on earth to break into and build a successful brand or company in. You have to stay the course and be patient, as there are many ups and downs on the journey.
