Paul Gelardi is CEO of Hightech Extracts, an engineering company developing systems for the manufacturing of extract-based products.
Paul is a mechanical engineer by degree and a dreamer by inclination. Paul’s specialties include product development, process engineering, manufacturing strategy and new business development.
His career has encompassed a broad range of products, manufacturing technologies, and commercial start-ups, largely involving fully automated manufacturing of technical products and complex assemblies.
We recently invited Paul for a Q&A session to talk about his background and his company Hightech Extracts
Ganjly: What is your background and what made you decide to pursue a career in cannabis?
Paul Gelardi: My partner is a process engineer and I am a graduate Chemist. It’s a great intersection of skills in a clearly growing industry.
Ganjly: How many employees do you have and what kind of traits do you look for when hiring new members?
Paul Gelardi: We currently employ just under 10 employees. Our main criteria is a match with the job description. Technical persons need be well trained in SCFE. Sales folks need to have the interpersonal as well as the technical skills to be effective.
Ganjly: What is the most challenging experience you have had in the cannabis industry so far?
Paul Gelardi: Dealing with the moving carpet of regulations and state requirements. The fact that every state is different, each municipality different, and every health and safety requirement different.
Ganjly: What is your proudest moment since you started down this path of being an entrepreneur in the cannabis space?
Paul Gelardi: The acknowledgment in the industry that our SCFE system is the gold standard for safety, efficiency, automation, and ease of operation.
Ganjly: Do you have plans for new products, services or events and would you be willing to drop any hints about what we can expect from your company in the future?
Paul Gelardi: Yes, we will shortly be releasing information and products that will be game changers in terms of process and efficiency. Stay tuned.
Ganjly: What is your advice for hopeful cannabis entrepreneurs who are considering joining the cannabis industry? What are the positives and negatives they should expect?
Paul Gelardi: There are so many facets of the industry that being an expert at the function you intend to perform is essential. If you have never had retail experience, perhaps running a dispensary is not for you. If you are not well versed in the operation of extraction and the physical properties that control it, perhaps processing is not for you. If you are not well-financed, perhaps becoming a grower is not for you. Find the area that fits your skill set and focus on that. There are plenty to choose from.
Thank you, Paul, for taking the time out to talk to us!
