Stephen Gold is the Co-Owner of Fore Twenty Sports and Co-Founder of the Daily Leaf.
@the_ dailyleaf is a platform that helps consumers find local information pertaining to dispensary deals, product launches, and cannabis culture events.
The service now provides visitors with savings of 10-75 percent off their regularly priced cannabis products.
In addition, The Daily Leaf produces compelling behind-the-scenes video content and hosts events like Canna Bowl and the Fore Twenty Golf Tournament, “The Largest Cannabis Golf Tournament In The Northwest.” In 2018, TDL will be debuting their app and expanding to Vegas.
We recently invited Stephen for a Q&A session to talk about his background and his two companies, Fore Twenty Sports and the Daily Leaf.
Ganjly: What is your background?
Stephen Gold: I have always had a passion for the arts—working in the music and fashion industries before getting involved in cannabis. I love networking, meeting new people and exploring new ideas. Throw me in a think tank and we will come up with the next unicorn business.
Ganjly: What motivated you to create Daily Leaf Deals? What is the Daily Leaf Deals? When did it start?
Stephen Gold: The Daily Leaf was created out of bare necessity. Moving from NYC, I came to Portland with six months worth of rent money and a dream to put something together in the cannabis industry. I had no idea what I was going to get involved in, who I was going to work for, or what was what. Once in Portland and exploring the medical cannabis space, I could not find one good place online that had aggregated information on deals and specials with pictures allowing a consumer the opportunity to almost touch a product before actually driving to a dispensary to make a purchase. Once exploring the idea, I met my business partner Andy Yashar and we got to work to to create The Daily Leaf.
Ganjly: What is The Daily Leaf?
Stephen Gold: The Daily Leaf is a platform that helps consumers find real time information related to products being sold in medical and recreational retail outlets. We help consumers find deals and exclusives, as well as give them an inside peek into the industry. Brands are able to interact with consumers—letting them know where they will be doing demos and which dispensaries have their exclusive drops. We just launched version 2 of our platform and are planning the launch of our iPhone and Android app which should debut in a month or two.
Ganjly: What is the most challenging experience you have had in the cannabis industry so far?
Stephen Gold: It’s volatile. Two weeks ago, we were at a retail location throwing a huge party on 420 and today their doors are closed down. Unfortunately, there are a lot of pitfalls of owning a cannabis business and there’s no 100% foolproof way to success. Everyone thinks that the industry and everything surrounding it is booming, but most don’t understand all the hard work it takes to actually achieve those goals of grandeur.
Ganjly: Tell us more also about Fore Twenty Golf and Cannabowl.
Stephen Gold: Fore Twenty Sports is a b2b cannabis industry sports themed events organization. We combine sports and cannabis to create lasting memories and relationships for companies involved in the industry. We felt that while trade shows have tremendous value, they do not offer people the opportunity to put their guard down. Usually it’s give me your business card and shoot an email to each other next week. During our events, everyone in attendance ends has a great time and actually connects with the other businesses involved. Great partnerships are built because we offer a unique approach to networking.
Our Fore Twenty Golf Tournament is in its 4th year and our next tournament is on June 28th in Oregon. We have plans on expanding our golf tournaments and creating a circuit of tournaments in the future. Canna Bowl is our Budtenders Bowling Tournament—a huge bowling tournament tournament where the winning team takes home a cash prize. It’s an opportunity during the winter time for budtenders and brands to connect. We bring a DJ out, throw the neon lights on, turn all the video games on for free and have a little daytime party for everyone involved.
Ganjly: Do you have plans for new products, services or events and would you be willing to drop any hints about what we can expect from your company in the future?
Stephen Gold: We are just getting started. We have spent the last four years in Oregon really proofing out both The Daily Leaf and Fore Twenty Sports to ensure that we can scale and promote our businesses in other legal cannabis states across the U.S. and into other countries. We are working on a lot of cool features and tech that will excite the cannabis lover!
Ganjly: How does your app get real-time daily deals?
Stephen Gold: We work with our retail and brand partners who update their information as they choose on our platform. Currently, we work with around 50 retail locations and 20 brands in the Oregon market. We wanted to ensure that all the information portrayed on our platform is generated from our partners so that the consumer is getting the information directly from the suppliers, and not reinterpreted in the middle.
Ganjly: Any advice for entrepreneurs starting a business in the cannabis industry?
Stephen Gold: Go for it! There is still so much to be done, and the good people in the industry are really just getting their grounds for full legalization which is years from now. While many people and companies have created tremendous market share, there’s always room for thought provokers and strong-willed individuals. Now keep in mind…this isn’t easy!
Thank you so much for your time Stephen! We really appreciate it and we are excited to try your new app! We do agree with you that you don’t really get to put your guard down when attending trade shows. Can’t wait to see pictures on your Fore Twenty Golf Tournament.
